However, there are other benefits that might have you popping in a piece of gum as well, such as improving your concentration.

Chewing Gum and Cognition

Researchers from Cardiff University completed a study in which they evaluated the concentration of 38 participants. Each participant was given an audio memory test, and half of the group was instructed to chew gum throughout the 30-minute exam.

In the test, participants were instructed to list numbers being read in random order and were scored based on how quickly and accurately they were able to determine the sequence. They also completed surveys based on their mood both before and after the exam.

After the study, it was found that when participants chewed gum throughout the test, they had faster reaction times. They also had more accurate results, especially during the end portion of the test. This shows that chewing gum can benefit some areas when it comes to cognition.

Chewing Gum and Dental Health

In addition to the concentrated benefits that you’ll enjoy when chewing gum, making gum that is flavored by Xylitol a part of your daily routine can also help your oral health.

According to the ADA, studies have shown that when you chew on sugarless gum for about 20 minutes after eating a meal, you can help to prevent tooth decay. This is because the chewing action of this gum increases saliva flow, which will wash away debris and food particles while neutralizing acids in the mouth.

Remember that if you want to enjoy all the benefits of chewing gum that you only select sugar-free varieties. Only these gums will contain the ADA seal of approval and can give you the cognition benefits while also protecting your teeth.
